THE MERCY OF ALLAH

The mercy of Allah is one of the most profound truths revealed to humanity. It is a mercy that encompasses every aspect of existence, touching all of creation, seen and unseen. From the smallest blessing in daily life to the vast wonders of the universe, Allah’s mercy is constant, limitless, and all-encompassing.

Allah Himself declares in the Qur’an: “My mercy encompasses all things” (Surah Al-A‘raf 7:156). This verse alone reminds us that there is nothing beyond the reach of His compassion. His mercy is not limited to a select few, nor is it restricted by time or place. It embraces the believer and the disbeliever, the righteous and the sinner, the human and the animal. The rising of the sun, the falling of rain, the provision of food, and the beating of our hearts are all daily signs of His boundless mercy.

Yet, Allah’s mercy is not only worldly it extends to the Hereafter in ways far greater than we can imagine. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that Allah has divided His mercy into one hundred parts. Only one part has been sent down to this world, and it is through this portion that creation shows compassion to one another. Parents care for their children, animals protect their young, and hearts soften toward one another all because of this single portion. The remaining ninety-nine parts are reserved for the Day of Judgment, when Allah will show a mercy beyond imagination to His servants.

This should inspire both hope and humility. Hope, because no matter how many sins one has committed, Allah’s mercy remains greater. He is Ar-Rahman (The Most Compassionate) and Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful). A sincere turn of the heart, a moment of repentance, can unlock His forgiveness. Humility, because we cannot rely solely on our deeds to enter Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us that it is only by Allah’s mercy that anyone will be saved.

To recognize the mercy of Allah is to live in gratitude. Every blessing, every breath, every opportunity to turn back to Him is a gift of His compassion. It calls us to embody mercy in our own lives to be gentle with others, forgiving of faults, and generous in spirit. As the Prophet ﷺ said, “The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth, and the One above the heavens will be merciful to you.

True awareness of Allah’s mercy transforms the heart. It replaces despair with hope, arrogance with humility, and harshness with gentleness. It reminds us that no one is beyond redemption, so long as they sincerely repent. And it assures us that the doors of forgiveness remain open until the final breath.

In a world often filled with hardship and struggle, reflecting on the mercy of Allah is a source of immense comfort. It teaches us patience in trials, gratitude in blessings, and optimism in uncertainty. Most importantly, it directs us toward the ultimate mercy: eternal nearness to Allah in Paradise.

Indeed, the mercy of Allah is the greatest gift bestowed upon creation. To seek it, to trust in it, and to live by its example is to find true peace in this world and salvation in the next.
