2027: OGUN MUSLIM COUNCIL TO ENGAGE POLITICAL PARTIES, ASPIRANTS AHEAD OF ELECTIONS

The Ogun State Muslim Council has announced plans to engage political parties, aspirants, electoral bodies, and civil society organisations in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed in a communiqué issued on Tuesday in Abeokuta by the Council’s Secretary-General, Alhaji Kamal’deen Akintunde, following its general meeting held on Sunday.

Akintunde explained that the move was part of efforts to foster dialogue with key election stakeholders to promote a better society before and after the polls. He added that the Council would work closely with the League of Imams and Alfas to achieve this goal.

The meeting urged all Muslim faithful to actively participate in the forthcoming continuous voters’ registration exercise. It also advised officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold fairness and integrity in their conduct.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Muslims in the state and endorsed the bill currently before the National  Assembly seeking to increase women’s participation in politics  a step it described as vital to national development.

On education, the Council appealed to Imams and heads of Qur’anic schools to integrate vocational training and formal subjects into their curriculum, in support of initiatives to tackle the issue of out-of-school children in Ogun State.

The meeting also ratified the commencement of the process to appoint a new President-General for the Council.
