TOLERANCE IN ISLAM: QUR’AN AND SUNNAH TEACHINGS OF THE PROPHET
TOLERANCE IN ISLAM URGED AS KEY TO GLOBAL HARMONY AND UNITY
Tolerance refers to the ability to endure pain or hardship. It can also be described as the willingness to accept or allow differing opinions and perspectives.
When we cultivate tolerance, we create space for others to express themselves and develop the capacity to listen and respect their viewpoints.
Intolerance, on the other hand, breeds negativity and harm, often leading to conflict and the breakdown of relationships.
In Arabic, tolerance is referred to as “tasamuh.” Islam strongly promotes tolerance and highlights its significance and benefits, aiming to establish peace in the world.
The religion does not encourage humiliation, silence in the face of wrongdoing, or injustice toward oneself. Rather, the concept of tolerance in Islam is about recognizing and accepting that human beings are naturally diverse in their appearances, circumstances, perspectives, opinions, speech, behavior, and values.
Allah says in Quran in Surah Al-Hajj,verse 67-69
For every religion We have appointed rites which they perform.
So, [O Muhammad], let the disbelievers not contend with you over the matter but invite them to your Lord.
Indeed, you are upon straight guidance. And if they dispute with you, then say
“Allah is most knowing of what you do. Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which you used to differ.”
In another place Allah says,in Surah An-Nahl, verse 125:
“Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and kind counsel, and debate with them in the most gracious manner. Surely, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path and who is rightly guided.”
From the life of our Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H), we learn numerous lessons on tolerance. His character and lifestyle perfectly exemplify the patience and forbearance required to live a balanced and harmonious life. Once, when some people questioned why Allah does not impose hardships or immediately destroy false gods to prove the truth of His Oneness, Allah revealed this verse of the Qur’an in response.
A person should practice tolerance during difficult phases of life whether facing financial loss, the death of loved ones, or any form of hardship. Islam teaches us not to lose patience in such moments. Instead of questioning why Allah has chosen them for this trial, believers should recognize that pain itself can be a blessing, for Allah tests those closest to Him.
If pain were not among the greatest blessings, why would Allah grant it to His most beloved servants? (the prophets)?
In this and many other ways, Islam stands as a beautiful religion of peace. If Muslim communities worldwide begin to truly embody the authentic teachings of Islam, the world will witness its true image. By reflecting the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah through our character and conduct, we can inspire others to embrace this beautiful faith.
