THROWBACK THURSDAY WITH 3SIXTYISLAM LOOKING BACK TO MOVE FORWARD: THE FAREWELL SERMON OF THE PROPHET
Bismillāh-ir-Raḥmān-ir-Raḥīm.
Every Thursday, the world floods with nostalgia. Old photos, childhood memories, and moments that made us who we are. But here at 3SixtyIslam, Throwback Thursday means something deeper it’s about reviving our roots and reflecting on the moments in Islamic history that transformed the world.
Today, we turn back the clock over 1,400 years to a monumental event in human history the Farewell Sermon (Khutbatul Wada’) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
A DEFINING MOMENT IN HUMANITY
It was the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah, 10 AH. On the plains of Arafah, under the blazing Arabian sun, over 120,000 companions gathered. The Prophet ﷺ stood upon his camel, and the mountain echoed with silence. What he delivered wasn’t just a farewell it was a legacy.
This was his last public address his closing guidance before returning to his Lord.
🖋️ HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FAREWELL SERMON
Here are just a few timeless teachings from that day:
On Human Equality
“O people! Your Lord is One and your father (Adam) is one. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have superiority over an Arab; a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor does a black person have superiority over a white person except by righteousness and good deeds.”
Before human rights conferences or global peace treaties — this message of equality and dignity was declared from a desert mountain by a man who changed the world.
On the Sanctity of Life and Property
“Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred like the sanctity of this day, in this month, in this land.”
A powerful statement: the life, wealth, and dignity of every Muslim is to be honored. Today, as the world struggles with violence and injustice, this sermon reminds us of the universal sanctity of human life.
On Women’s Rights
“Treat women well, for they are your partners and committed helpers.”
The Prophet ﷺ uplifted women at a time when they were marginalized. His words still echo today in the call for dignity, respect, and justice for women in every corner of the Ummah.
On Accountability
“You will return to your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. So do not turn back after me as disbelievers, striking the necks of one another.”
This was a warning and a reminder that we are all individually responsible for our actions before Allah. Islam is not inherited, it is lived.
On Completing the Religion
Toward the end of the sermon, a verse was revealed:
“This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:3)
This moment brought tears to many Sahabah. The mission was complete. The message was preserved. Islam was now a global trust.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
This sermon isn’t ancient history it’s a living roadmap. Here’s how we can bring it into our modern lives:
🟢 1. Practice Real Equality
Racism, tribalism, and classism have no place in Islam. Let’s start with our hearts, our homes, and our communities.
🟢 2. Protect Human Dignity
From online bullying to family disputes, uphold the sanctity of every Muslim’s dignity, honor, and safety.
🟢 3. Honor Women with Truth, Not Trends
Support, respect, and empower women not just in theory, but in family dynamics, community roles, and decision-making.
🟢 4. Live Accountably
Every choice, click, and word is recorded. Make it count. You are writing your book every day.
🟢 5. Preserve the Legacy of Islam
Learn it. Practice it. Pass it on. Teach it to your children not just in words, but in how you carry yourself.
A PERSONAL CHALLENGE
Take 10 minutes today.
Read or listen to the Farewell Sermon in full.
Sit with its meaning.
Ask yourself:
“Am I living by the Prophet’s final message?”
If not start small. But start today.
A DUA FOR REFLECTION
“O Allah, allow us to live the message of our beloved Prophet ﷺ. Make us among those who uphold justice, protect dignity, eliminate pride, and walk humbly in the light of Islam. Let us die as Muslims, and be raised among the righteous. Ameen.”
