VIDEO, PHOTOS: SELF-PROCLAIMED USTAZ EXPOSED FOR FAKING WIFE’S ILLNESS TO EXPLOIT NIGERIANS
A man who fraudulently claimed to be an “ustaz” has been exposed for deceiving Nigerians by faking his wife’s illness to collect donations.
AbdulGafar Olamilekan Shehu, who had been presenting himself as a respected Islamic scholar, allegedly used his self-proclaimed status to manipulate people into sending money for his wife’s supposed treatment.
Shehu claimed that his wife, Maryam, was suffering from chronic ventricular septal defect (VSD) and urgently needed surgery.
He reached out to Nigerians on WhatsApp, sharing heart-wrenching messages and emotional voice notes, asking for donations.
In one of his messages, he introduced himself as the president of Nigerian students who graduated from Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 2017, further bolstering his false identity as a trusted figure.
To gain sympathy, Shehu posted pictures of his wife and forged medical reports, making his appeal seem legitimate.
However, his scam was uncovered when one of the people he contacted realized that Maryam was not ill at all.
Further investigation revealed that the photos he used were stock images, freely available on the internet.
Nigerians are now being urged to remain vigilant and cautious, as fraudulent schemes like this continue to prey on people’s goodwill.
