SPIRITUAL DIGEST: RAMADAN DAY 1 (A SUPPLICATION FROM SURAH AL-BAQARAH)
By: Ajape Sefiu A., Adedeji Monsurat Adenike
The beautiful supplication for our Ramadan day one spiritual digest is derived from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127), a dua made by Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) while building the Kaaba.
It reflects humility and the desire for Allah’s acceptance of good deeds.
Our Lord, accept (this) from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Rabbana taqabbal minna, innaka Antas-Samee’ul-‘Aleem.
Meaning & Explanation:
- رَبَّنَا (Rabbana) – “Our Lord” (A humble and loving way to address Allah)
- تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا (taqabbal minna) – “Accept this from us” (A plea for Allah to accept their righteous efforts)
- إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ (innaka Antas-Samee’ul-‘Aleem) – “Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing” (Acknowledging Allah’s absolute knowledge and awareness of their sincerity)
Context in the Quran:
This dua is mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:127):
And [mention] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House with Ismail, [saying]: ‘Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
It highlights the humility of two great prophets who, despite their noble mission, still sought Allah’s approval, recognizing that no deed is valuable unless accepted by Him.
Lessons from This Dua:
- Sincerity in Worship – Even the most righteous should pray for Allah’s acceptance of their deeds.
- Humility – No matter how noble the task, one should always seek Allah’s pleasure.
- Acknowledging Allah’s Attributes – He is As-Samee’ (The All-Hearing) and Al-‘Aleem (The All-Knowing), meaning He hears our prayers and knows our intentions.
- Importance of Making Dua – Even while performing a great act (building the Kaaba), Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) still asked for acceptance, teaching us to always turn to Allah.
How to Use This Dua:
- After completing a good deed (prayer, fasting, charity, Hajj, etc.), ask Allah for acceptance.
- During supplication (dua), especially in moments of humility and gratitude.
- As part of daily prayers, recognizing that only Allah’s acceptance makes our efforts meaningful.
This dua is a reminder that acts of worship are not about quantity but about sincerity and acceptance by Allah.
