The Saudi Ministry of Health has underscored the importance of receiving the meningitis vaccine for those planning to perform Umrah during Ramadan, as part of broader efforts to enhance preventive health and curb the spread of infectious diseases.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the ministry advised that vaccinations should be administered at least 10 days before traveling to Saudi Arabia to ensure sufficient immunity. However, individuals who have been vaccinated within the past five years do not require a booster dose, as the vaccine remains effective during this period.
To facilitate access, the ministry encouraged individuals to book appointments through the Sehhaty app and visit adult vaccination clinics. It also stressed the importance of following preventive measures to ensure a safe and healthy Umrah experience.
This directive aligns with the Ministry of Health’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the well-being of Umrah pilgrims, promote health awareness, and contribute to a comprehensive healthcare system that enhances quality of life and improves healthcare services.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord, typically caused by infection. It can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. The disease can affect individuals of any age.
In March last year, Saudi authorities mandated flu vaccinations for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
Additionally, the pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as those with chronic illnesses. Travelers were advised to receive flu shots and all other necessary vaccines at least 15 days before departure—an extension from the previous 10-day recommendation.
