AFTER ALLAH, WHO IS THE MOST REGARDED?

Respecting your parents is the next after believing in Allah and worshipping him. The parents are the human that brought us into this world and Allah has commanded us to be dutiful and respect them. As said in Qur’an 17 vs 23

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him.  And that you be dutiful to your parents.  If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.” (Quran 17:23)

Subsequently, emphasis is laid on the mothers. They are to be regarded and pay attention to as the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said to one of his companions when he asked who he is to take care between his parents and that he is to take care of his mother three times, before the he told him his father the fourth time.

Another of the Hadith of the prophet is referenced below:

“Heaven lies under the feet of your mother.”
–The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Ahmad, Nasa’i)

Also, keeping up a good relationship with your family is essential. Try to avoid bringing up or taking part in controversial subjects regarding religion among your family members. It is almost unavoidable, but your parents will eventually accept that Islam is not going to turn you into a terrorist if you stay calm during these tense moments especially if you’re a revert.

Gradually, your parents will gain some respect and understanding of Islam and may start to become genuinely interested. This is a great sign and insha’Allah, God will make a way for them to accept Islam.

What you do not want to do is act like you know everything, attempt to debate everything, or overly defend yourself in a way that might make you angry or upset. This will just cause heartache and uneasiness. Your priority now should be to work on yourself. By working on yourself, you will be able to convince and win the hearts of your parents.

Both parents deserve happiness and care which is your duty to them while they are still alive and prayers for them when they have gone to meet their Lord too.
